Shirley Smith Founder & Trustee

Shirley’s role as an If U Care Share Trustee

Having worked in sales for most of her career, Shirley’s life was turned upside down in 2005 after losing her oldest son, Daniel, to suicide. Along with her family, Shirley helped to create If U Care Share Foundation in loving memory of Daniel, whose loss inspired a determination to ensure that no other family should face such pain without support.

Following 19 years of dedication to campaigning and running the charity – playing a central and heartfelt role in shaping our mission, values and enduring commitment to saving lives and supporting those affected by suicide – Shirley transitioned from CEO to Trustee in October 2024.

Shirley brings lived experience, compassion and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by bereaved families. Her voice and insight are invaluable in guiding our approach to prevention, intervention, community support and education. She is driven by a powerful belief in the importance of speaking openly about mental health, encouraging connection and ensuring that people know they are never alone.

Shirley’s dedication, strength and unwavering commitment to honouring Daniel’s memory continues to shape our work, inspiring hope for individuals and families across the North East and beyond.

What is your favourite biscuit and why?

I love Fox's Chocolatey White Chocolate Rounds as the white chocolate is so thick and the biscuit is so very crunchy. The perfect combo!
