ACADEMY: HORNETS WORKING WITH IF U CARE SHARE

THE charity If U Care Share will be visiting Watford’s Academy scholars next Friday (16 March) to talk through issues connected with emotional well-being.

Working alongside League Football Education (LFE), If U Care Share aims to work more than 20 football clubs and close to 400 apprentice players in workshops designed to assist the young players deal with negative emotions and feelings of despair and distress.

Watford are just one of a number of clubs to liaise with the charity after fellow npower Championship sides Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Peterborough United all worked with the charity, which is run by husband and wife team, Dean and Shirley Smith.

Project aims to support Watford FC’s apprentice players

The charity If U Care Share is now working with Watford FC to support young footballers through issues associated with emotional well-being.

In collaboration with League Football Education, by the end of the season more than 20 football clubs and close to 400 apprentice players will have taken part in workshops designed to help them deal with negative emotions and feelings of despair and distress.

Thirteen clubs, including Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Peterborough Utd, have already been involved in the initiative that sees players spend 90 minutes with If U Care Share’s husband and wife team, Dean and Shirley Smith, who lost their son Daniel to suicide.

With the recent death of former Wales player and manager Gary Speed putting the topic back in the spotlight, If U Care Share’s ethos centres around talking through issues, which they believe can make a crucial difference and, in some instances, save lives.

Mr Smith said: “We have our own personal experience of losing a loved one through these types of issues.

“Everyone hits a time in their lives when they can feel really down. Sometimes we can pinpoint the reason why i.e. exams, relationships, pressure. There may be times we just feel down and there may be no reason for feeling this way. We’re telling the apprentices that it’s ok to not feel ok.

“It’s so important that if you feel this way and you can’t understand why, that you talk to someone. It’s also about clubs and players recognising the types of emotional strain that can suddenly develop.

“We’re not saying we have every answer to every problem but sharing your problems can make a difference.”

League Football Education’s Chief Executive, Alan Sykes, added: “This work is extremely important in helping young players understand the different emotions they can go through in life. Everyone will feel down at some stage and this is about trying to deal about those lows in the best possible way.”

“The experiences Dean and Shirley share with the apprentices are really powerful and have already been well received by Football League clubs. It’s great to know that support is on hand if anyone needs it.”
